SENIORS, and OTHERS WE NEED YOUR HELP! Meals on Wheels is not free! This may come as a surprise to some, but many of you know that providing meals on a day-to-day basis is an expensive proposition. Although we rely on funding through the Federal Older Americans Act, and from other State and local agencies, we cannot do it all without your help! One of the most important sources of funding for Meals On Wheels is contributions from our homebound patrons and from those who dine at one of our three congregate centers. We ask that those over 60 who dine at one of our centers contribute $3.00 per meal, while we request $2.00 per meal from those qualified for homebound delivery. These are more then reasonable contributions for fully nutritious meals served five days a week. As you may be aware, due to cutbacks in Federal, State, and County funding in the recent past, we now deliver five frozen meals once a week to homebound seniors. We can even make microwave ovens available to the homebound if needed. Many of the seniors who visit our meal sites, as well as a number of the homebound, do not provide us with the requested contribution. Some think that the program is free, while others feel it is someone else's responsibility to pay. Meals On Wheels is an IRS qualified 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation and cannot operate without your cooperation and continuing contributions. We try to keep expenses to the bare minimum, including unfortunately, paying rather low salaries to our few paid employees. This is your program...it belongs to the senior citizens of the Hi Desert. Without your contributions, we face the real and serious problem of going under. The program is only as good as you make it...by continuing to contribute! We cannot force you to pay for meals, therefore it is your responsibility to make voluntary contributions for each meal in order to see the program continue and thrive. Of course, if you can contribute more then the suggested amount, it is greatly welcomed. Contributions from others in the community are also encouraged, and from time-to-time, we hold fundraising activities such as yard sales, barbeques, and spaghetti dinners.
